I love food. I spent quiet a great deal of time in my Kitchen preparing healthy, whole food meals. I love flavor and texture, I love to photograph food, and I also love to know that what I am eating is going to serve my body in a good way.
I spent the majority of my life (outside of early childhood) eating what everyone else eats in America. My body was filled with Fast Food, fried food and convenience food and I was way too meat and sugar dependent. I began trying diets about 7 years ago like the “South Beach” or Atkins diet – and although I did lose weight from those diets, I knew inside there was no way I could be healthy eating the large amounts of fat and Dairy that I was consuming. In addition, I always gained the weight back, and other issues that I had struggled with in life still remained (mostly stomach problems).
So one day after watching a documentary and sitting on the fence for way too long “preparing” for my lifestyle change, I decided to overhaul my diet It repulsed me to see exactly where our food was coming from.
I instantly cut out meat products (except fish) so, including anything with Chicken, beef or pork. I kept this up for a year eating only Seafood, and fresh and beautiful colored Pastured Eggs from a local farm. I still ate fast food as long as it was fish (BK Fish from burger King) and still ate things that were fried, convenient (prepackaged foods) and sugar.
After a bout of severe Acid Reflux – so bad that I was in bed for 3 days, I decided to do a Raw Food detox. I did this overnight – and it was very tough. I started by drinking 64 ounces of green juice a day which I made myself in my Vitamix. Then ate nothing but Raw Food and Raw Juice for a full 30 days losing 16 pounds instantly (first two weeks) and regaining my sleep (Prior to this, I would wake several times a night prior), and energy.
And today – although I do not eat a fully raw food diet, I still enjoy many raw foods and just “eat clean” (Local Pastured Eggs, Wild Salmon, Wild Sardines, Wild Tuna, and Organic chicken), and a few gluten free products (Organic Brown-Rice Tortillas, Organic Flax Seed Crackers, Organic Fruit and nut bars and occasionally, Organic Popcorn etc).
After 4 months I dropped 30 pounds – starting out at 187 lbs (the heaviest I have ever been outside of pregnancy) down to 157 lbs. Then, I lost 20 more pounds – unfortunately this additional weight loss was stress induced. But this leads into another part of my lifestyle change – FITNESS! Having been a regular wine drinker and cigarette smoker for many years, in October 2011 I quit drinking all together – who needs it? And In January 2013 I quit smoking cigarettes and started to pursue my life long dream of being a recreational runner.
I created this blog and it encompasses a few important things I love and want to continue to flourish in; while possibly helping a few others in my process. Whole food nutrition, Living a Natural life (including my hair), Fitness and exploration, Running, Conscious eating, Photography.
